 History on Reiki

Reiki’s origins are somewhat mysterious, with some sources tracing similar energy healing practices as far back as 2500 BC. However, the modern system of Reiki was rediscovered and developed in the early 20th century by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk and spiritual seeker. Born in 1865 into a well-off family, Usui received a traditional education and later studied in a Tendai Buddhist monastery, where he explored various spiritual disciplines and healing techniques. Driven by a deep desire to understand how ancient spiritual teachers, such as Buddha and Jesus, were able to heal, he embarked on a long journey of study, meditation, and practice. This quest led him to Mount Kurama, where he undertook a 21-day period of fasting and meditation. During this time, he experienced a powerful spiritual awakening and received a vision of sacred symbols and teachings, which formed the basis of the Reiki healing system. Following this revelation, Usui began practicing and teaching Reiki, eventually opening his first school on April 2. Before his death in 1926, he trained 16 Reiki Masters and laid the foundation for Reiki to be shared widely. Today, Reiki is practiced around the world as a gentle, hands-on healing technique that promotes relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being,

while remaining free of religious ties.

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle, spiritual healing practice that promotes deep relaxation, balance, and well-being on every level—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. Whether received through light touch or from a distance, Reiki supports your body’s natural healing abilities and helps restore inner peace.

A Universal Energy of Love

Reiki is non-invasive, non-judgmental, and rooted in unconditional love—a universal energy that connects all living beings. It transcends religion, belief systems, race, time, and space. Rather than belonging to any one group or tradition, Reiki represents a powerful yet subtle force that works beyond the limits of human understanding.

The Meaning of Reiki

The word Reiki comes from Japanese:

  • Rei refers to universal wisdom or higher consciousness

  • Ki (also known as chi or prana) is the life-force energy that flows through all living things

Together, Reiki means “spiritually guided life-force energy.”

How Reiki Works

Reiki works by encouraging the free flow of Ki energy through the body and energy field. This energy moves through energy centers (chakras) and pathways (meridians), supporting physical health and emotional clarity.

When this life-force energy is low or blocked—often due to stress, trauma, or negative thought patterns—it can lead to imbalance and eventually illness. Reiki helps clear these blockages and restore flow, bringing the body, mind, and spirit back into harmony.

Distant Reiki Healing

One of the unique aspects of Reiki is that it isn’t limited by time or space. Distance Reiki sessions allow healing energy to be sent and received without physical contact, making it ideal for clients who are remote, traveling, or unable to attend in person. The results are often just as powerful as hands-on sessions.

More Than the Physical

We are more than our physical bodies. Our energy field—known as the aura—holds emotions, memories, and patterns that influence our well-being. Reiki works not only with the physical body but also with the energy field, helping release stored stress, emotional blocks, and unconscious negativity that can affect our health and happiness.

How Reiki Works?

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive healing practice that encourages the natural flow of energy throughout the body. It supports balance and relaxation on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. Though Reiki comes from ancient spiritual traditions, modern science is beginning to explore how practices like Reiki can reduce stress and support the body’s own healing mechanisms. Many people find Reiki to be a valuable complement to conventional medicine, helping them manage symptoms and improve overall well-being.

The Life-Force Energy: Ki

Central to Reiki is the concept of Ki—a universal life-force energy present in all living things. Known as Qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Prana in Indian Ayurveda and yoga, Ki flows through specific energy centers called chakras and pathways called meridians. Blockages or disruptions in this energy flow are believed to contribute to physical ailments, emotional imbalances, and mental fatigue.

While Western medicine does not yet measure Ki directly, its existence is supported by practices such as acupuncture and qigong, which have shown tangible health benefits. These parallels offer a bridge for skeptics to understand Reiki’s framework as part of a wider tradition of energy medicine.

The Role of the Reiki Practitioner

During a Reiki session, the practitioner serves as a channel for universal life-force energy. Importantly, they do not use their own personal energy; instead, they facilitate the flow of Reiki energy, which is intelligent and self-guiding. This energy naturally moves to areas where it is most needed, responding to imbalances without conscious effort from either party.

Though this intuitive energy flow may sound mysterious, many recipients experience measurable relaxation and symptom relief. This suggests Reiki may engage physiological and psychological pathways—such as the nervous system’s relaxation response—that science is still uncovering.

The Science Behind Reiki

Research on Reiki is growing, with many studies highlighting its potential to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes relaxation and healing. Reiki sessions have been shown to reduce levels of stress hormones like cortisol, decrease heart rate and blood pressure, improve sleep, and support immune function.

Emerging scientific fields such as psychoneuroimmunology—which studies the connection between mind, nervous system, and immune responses—and biofield science explore how subtle energies like Reiki’s may affect health. While more rigorous research is needed, early clinical studies show promising results for Reiki in reducing pain, anxiety, and fatigue, especially as a complementary therapy in cancer care, surgery recovery, and mental health.

What You Might Feel During a Session

People’s experiences with Reiki vary widely. Some feel warmth, tingling, or gentle pulsations, while others sense a deep calm, emotional release, or mental clarity. These sensations often align with the body’s natural relaxation response, which helps release physical tension and stress held in muscles and the nervous system.

For skeptics, these effects can be explained as the body’s natural response to a quiet, focused environment combined with caring human touch or intention. Regardless of belief, many find Reiki sessions deeply restorative and grounding.

Reiki for Holistic Healing

Reiki works on the whole person—not just isolated symptoms—addressing physical, emotional, and mental well-being together. By clearing energy blockages and restoring balance across the entire system, Reiki supports the body’s natural healing processes and encourages personal growth.

Although the effects of Reiki can be subtle and cumulative, many recipients report lasting improvements in mood, sleep, pain management, and overall quality of life. Reiki is best viewed as a complementary therapy designed to support, not replace, conventional medical treatment.

Chakras are energy centers within the body that act as gateways between our physical and energetic selves. There are seven main chakras that run from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each chakra is linked to specific organs, emotions, and aspects of our well-being. When balanced, they allow energy (also known as Ki or life force) to flow freely. When blocked, they can contribute to stress, imbalance, or illness.

Meridians are energy pathways that run throughout the body, similar to veins or nerves. They are most commonly referenced in Traditional Chinese Medicine and are used in practices like acupuncture. These meridians carry life force energy through the body and connect to major organs and systems. When energy flows smoothly through the meridians, we feel balanced and well. When that flow is disrupted, it can lead to discomfort or dis-ease.

Reiki works with both chakras and meridians to clear energetic blockages, restore balance, and support the body’s natural ability to heal.
